Trenoc writing technique

As all the civilizations of the Federation have shown, they have all taken advantage of the various physiological features they evolved with, the Panatrak’s ability to fly has been an important part of their civilization, and in a lesser way, the Trenoc have made use of their strange hands, whose digits are covered with a thick keratinaceous sheath, unlike the soft fingertips of human hands.

The Soroteth, the first truly successful civilization on Trenoret had found a use for there curious horn sheathed digits, an old custom of engraving decorative art into these surfaces became the cornerstone of their language. From all available archaeological evidence it seems that they continued to use this method throughout their civilization, printing blocks and styluses only used for those who had lost digits or for unusual text sizes.

The rest of the Trenoc inherited this custom of equipping each digit with an element of the written language after the enlightenment, and even in these days of keypads, and computer terminals most Trenoc still carve the simple shape elements that make up their language into their digits, rather than resort to using a stylus.

Another impact of this was that even after the churches had expanded out of Hajahn and had all but annihilated most of the native languages with a uniform church language, the symbols on their digits continued to evolve. Though most Trenoc speak a common language and indeed it is quite possible for a Trenoc to wander about her home planet and have no barriers to her vocal communication (though other languages do exist they are used secondarily, however some mixing with the church language mean that regions have different dialects), it is an entirely different matter to read and write, as even though the language is said the same it is written in a different set of symbols.

The way about which the Trenoc set about carving their digits is curiously similar to how humans treat their hair (of which the Trenoc have none). Though it would be relatively easy for individuals to see to the process themselves (such as humans trimming their toenails) almost all will have their nails carved by a specialist (like what a hairdresser is to hair), though rather than the manicurists of human culture whose art is to make a vestigial claw element look beautiful, these specialists (Adlanten) see to their customer’s digits ensuring that there language remains clear. Where as on earth a person’s hand writing may reveal something to their mind, all a Trenoc’s imprints will tell you is who cares for their nails.
