The old Trenoc society, that is the world of the small fighting
clans before the enlightenment was extremely complex, with each clan
having a whole variety of distinct and unique customs, today’s order
is quite different. After the enlightenment, and the unity of the major
clans, social differences began to disappear with a pretty universal
system in place today, though there still remains a little diversity
amongst the communities today.
The keystone behind the Trenoc
social order comes right down to their life cycle, and many speculate
that many of the original basic beliefs stem directly from biological
instruction in the Trenoc proto-society.
Though in the Trenoc
lifecycle, males never gain sentience, they are still respected, though
are not treated with the same rights as female Trenoc, they have a
status more akin to sacred animals. Occasionally a male might develop
into a ‘bull’ or ‘Yannata’, these are particularly revered,
being more physically impressive more than intelligent (they are
generally twice as large as the adult male, and much stockier, they also
reclaim their large erectile frills, and are dappled in marvelous
colours).
Although male population is
relatively low to female, by biological bias, the population of males is
still quite a burden to Trenoc society, and in past days excess males
were sacrificed in special religious rituals, in more modern times
pharmacy has helped to reduce males population again, reducing the
burden, and it is still regular practice for Trenoc families to trade
males, usually to secure political ties.
Males are also worshipped
religiously, though these rituals tend to be simplistic relating to
fertility and the production of the land. Also although males are
herbivorous grazers, a few are always kept in any particular clan house,
though most are entrusted to protectorates out in the deep countryside.
All infant stages are
respected and are effectively sacrosanct, and trading in the infant
forms being extremely rare, apart from this the infant form receives
very little in terms of ceremony.
Infant females are nearly
always brought into a clan house prior to their transition to breeder
stage, the familiarity of other adult forms helps to generate social and
intelligent breeder stages, whereas leaving them to develop in the
desolate protectorates leads to a more insular development. There are
also a very few special communities, the Laekas, generally up in the
isolated mountain valleys where some young breeders are sent, and they
are raised in a special society, though the consequences of this
different rearing are arguable, these secret communities have sourced
many of the most important Trenoc. Selection for Laekas comes from a
choice of a Laeka protector, who’s job lies in searching for the
exceptional or unusually gifted. Though the Laekas provide an ancient
and free service, many reared breeders later return as protectors to the
Laeka they were raised.
The female breeder is the most
revered stage in Trenoc society, they represent the future of society,
all female breeders are rigorously protected by the protector stage
(hence the source to their name). Though protectors will by in large
deal with other protectors, they also like to spend time with any female
clan breeders, this form of contact provides most of the breeder’s
education, as very little formal education is set to this stage.
Sometimes a female breeder
might develop a certain characteristic which then boosts them even
further in the social order, such features as a red hide, or an unusual
mental ability (savant behaviour). All breeders are thought to be
symbols of purity and innocence, like humans treat their juveniles,
though few breeders have made their mark in history, the stage is
intrinsically linked to divinity.
The female protector stage is
the final step in a long lifecycle that finally gives Trenoc society its
truly sentient citizens. Amongst themselves the protectors give greatest
regard to their eldest, and those in high power (though these two
attributes generally go hand in hand, though Trenoc society is not a
gerontocracy). The greatest ceremony in this part of the lifecycle is
the final emergence from the breeder stage, this celebration symbolizes
the emergence of a real mind from the innocence of the breeder stage.
This
period is short lasting as these new protectors are sent back and
forwards receiving an extensive formal education, and eventually a
placement, nearly always in one of the communities local churches
(churches perform all the major roles in society from agriculture to
government), exceptionally rarely young protectors will take a
sabbatical after their education and join one of the few non family
based clans and communities (the kinless clans), these groups are often
the strongest religious components of the Trenoc churches, or in more
recent society have evolved into a type of intelligencia, where the
greatest minds have pooled together to form ‘false-families’ (the
Valenen most famously). |
