Surface
coverage:
The
planet’s surface is rarely interrupted by open water, which is an
improvement on the totally arid world before terraforming. Since the
start of terraforming in 2080, the amount of water on the surface has
greatly increased, this has for the most part been delivered by
aerobraking and detonating captured icy bodies. The project outcome is
to arrive with an oceanic coverage of about 40%, with a large ice filled
plains in the polar regions.
Geology:
The
planet is essentially geologically dead, without oceans, and a cooling
core, plate tectonics rapidly disappeared, with few features visible in
these times. Most dominant features are from volcanic uplift, and the
cracking caused by ground movement. Most of the planet is dominated by
dune filled plains. There has been no volcanism for at least 100 million
years, though outgassing continues from the cooling core, which appears
to have generated the freshwater subsurface aquifers.
Climate:
Before
the terraforming project the weather consisted of the dry winds
propelling the plain dunes, and the deposition of thin layers of ice in
the shaded poles at their winter season. Now with the terraforming
project underway the weather has become far more turbulent, the
thickening atmosphere regularly kicks up dust storms in the equatorial
regions. Precipitation is still rare despite the introduction of water,
and most of this is snowfall. At project completion the climate is hoped
to produce temperate climes across the planet.
Life:
The
life on the planet has been introduced as part of the terraforming
project, at the moment this consists mainly of the microbial and plants
species which have been cultured and released. The project hopes to
finish with a viable biosphere based around ecologies found in the
temperate regions of Gadarren.
Colonies:
As
the planet is uninhabitable at the moment, the population is restricted
to environment controlled research posts scattered across the planets
surface. The population varies with the seasons from about 120,000 to
250,000, where the increase is prior to spring periods where biological
culturing and monitoring requires more people.
