1947: In 1947, Kia was first observed at close quarters by a Trenoc exploration vehicle. The atmospheric and to some degree land distribution of Kia had been observed decades before by Trenoc astrometry and astrobiology projects, though the relative abundance of habitable worlds they discovered meant that missions to these worlds were slow to be scheduled due to the relatively small starship fleet at that time. The survey craft was completing a tour of a relatively poorly defined sector of Trenoc known space, and had already in its mission investigated at greater detail, the future Federation colony world Serras. The observation of Kia was very limited though a number of observation and climate monitoring platforms were placed around Kia. 1962: The Trenoc survey vessel Ameth-Ayasa one of the most sophisticated biological research vehicles of the time, was sent to investigate Kia’s biota, and suitability for habitation. The Ameth-Ayasa was to carry out a thorough five month mission to examine the biota on the largest continent on Kia, and most importantly establish a good understanding of the underlying biochemistry to the life on that world (and so would form the foundation of later more taxonomic missions). The Ameth-Ayasa would carry a crew of both Trenoc and the newly joined Panatrak, the mission was also an important step in cooperative missions between the races, as well as establishing a good understanding amongst biological scientists of both races of the biological requirements of the other. The missions would also set up a kind of benchmark for future biological investigations, which would allow either race to extract information valuable to both races from their research. The vessel Ameth-Ayasa touched down on the largest continent which would then be named Asayan, from the vessel (Asayan is a literary fantasy world in Trenoc history, analogies to Earth’s culture would include ‘lands’ such as Narnia and Camelot). The rest of the continents were also more formally named by the crew of the Ameth-Ayasa and replacing the temporary names given from previous surveys. There was also on the night of the first day an informal ceremony and baptisement of the planet from onboard the ship. The first two weeks of analysis were conducted without any of the researcher’s assistance, as autonomous screening of the local environment for harmful bacteria and virii was carried out before more open investigations of the planet’s ecology was carried out by the scientific crew. The conclusions of this preliminary testing resulted in a negative results for any harmful organisms, and the lower decks housing the biological laboratories were opened up for use by the scientific crew, though at this stage material was still brought in by vehicle and handled under protective conditions. After 20 days these biological restrictions were dropped, and biological crews were allowed to wander the surface without environmental suits. When this was declared an outside celebration was allowed on the surface, and a more formal ceremony of claiming Kia for the Federation made. The results of this celebration, combined with the relatively poorly defined reactions to the races different foodstuffs, led to a temporary ban on leaving the ship until it was resolved that the medical problems were as a result of the celebration, and not the environment. By the midpoint of the mission most of the local fauna and flora had been classified and an idea of the evolutionary history of these species made, also a comprehensive understanding of terrestrial biochemistry was complete, though the continuous aircraft forays across the continent was bringing in a continuous diversity of new examples. Biological teams were beginning to build up a picture of the different ecologies present on the continent, as well as building up an understanding for how the niches present were occupied. The biological survey continued beyond the original five-month plan, though after six months the Ameth-Ayasa had to return to Trenoc shipyards for servicing and refuelling. After the work of the Ameth-Ayasa was scrutinised by Pantrak and Trenoc councils it was forwarded as a potential colony world, though at this time in history there were far more potential colony worlds than there was infrastructure and people to colonise, as suck Kia had to wait a long time before another major suitability mission was to be launched to finalise inhabitation. 1966: Another survey vessel made another brief stop at Kia, though only long enough to send a smallcraft down to the surface to follow up on the experiments left running by the Ameth-Ayasa. |
