Merlin
production history

2135
Proposal for a class
of rapid military craft, which would be jointly built by Human/Galen
construction and design teams, to strengthen the ageing Trenoc craft of
similar function. The Merlin would arise as the favoured design forwarded

2140
Galen and Human
research and construction facilities began testing Merlin components.
2142
The first Merlin
craft was launched from Greenwich asteroid orbital facility in the Sol
system.
2145
The first round of
major design improvements were proposed, new craft were built with the
adjustments. The predominant changes involved the flight systems, a series
of advances made in Federation research facilities improved the Merlin’s
driver coil efficiency, allowing the ships to travel and manoeuvre faster
without out upgrading the powerplant.

2150
In this year the peak
production of the Merlin class was observed, the patterns and templates
had been circulated to all ship yards, though several dedicated shipyards,
particularly in Sol’s asteroid belt, and also in orbital facilities set
up in new Galen flight systems made, produced most of the new craft.

2160
Merlin craft
returning for maintenance work would have their weapons systems upgraded
from this time onwards, the new threat of the Mawa-rei had stimulated the
upgrade of the Federation’s relatively small military force. Many ships
were refitted with whatever the shipyard had in stock, which led to a
great diversity carried aboard these ships.
2175
By this time all of
the Merlin craft had been produced, the last and the 15,000th
(The most numerous type of warship produced by the Federation by this
time)
The Merlin craft
rarely played any front line role in the Mawa-rei wars, but they did
proved a rapid response defence force in military space, in addition to
escorting larger armour groups.
2200
By 2200 a third of
the Merlin craft produced had been decommissioned, some 4000 of the
remaining craft had been turned to non-military roles (mostly as
transports and personnel carriers). The war claimed some 1200 vessels,
though less than 400 hundred lives were lost, most of the craft were
abandoned because of damage, and only relatively few were destroyed with
crew onboard.
Most
vessels had been programmed for stellar infall at the point of
abandonment, but many damaged craft in Federation space are likely to be
recovered and decommissioned. Those craft that had been lost in
Magellanic space are unlikely to be recovered, though these craft are
most likely to be destroyed before they are recovered by other
civilizations. |
