specifications
Max
jump ~300ly,
Deviation better than 1/10 AU per Ly
Max speed 10^12c
Armament:
variable, but can carry as many weapons of the large frigate class
(generally ten or so of this class), many smaller weapons, also an
advanced defensive plasma weapon.
The
Amerraya-‘Aur class of jump ships represents a small but highly
sophisticated part of the Federation’s defensive fleet. The production
of these ships was at one time limited to the Panatrak home-system from
only a small number of asteroid facilities, since then this class of
ship has spawned a number of generic versions, though the
Amerraya-‘Aur still represents the pinnacle of Ferranti/Yaur-Marann
core design implementation.
The
development of the Amerraya-‘Aur class followed the successful
research of the Ferranti/Yaur-Marann drive system which was mostly an
effort between human and Galen research teams, however these original
groups lacked the ability to rapidly prototype an experimental craft,
and collaborated with some rapid prototyping test facilities in the
Patinar system. In fact many different prototypes were trialled before
the Amerraya-‘Aur began to take its current shape. The major bulk of
the vessel is taken up by the jump drive parts, which the rest of the
ship is built around, in the Amerraya-‘Aur class this central core is
able to be swapped out and replaced, and a new unit adapted to the power
plant module which lies behind it, it is this feature which set the
Amerraya-‘Aur ahead of other designs at the time. In its current
incarnation the surrounding ship is heavily armed, and carries several
big guns, the ship also carries superb shielding some of which is an
extension of the same shock-drive technology that propels the ship.
Despite its relatively large size, in excess of 250m, it has only a crew
complement of around ten, putting it at least in terms of crew more
within the fighter class, than the frigate class suggested by its
armament. The crew habitable sections of the ship are situated above the
large drive core in an expanded part of the hull, a large proportion of
the ship has little crew access and is by in large packed solid with
drive components, weapons or shield generators. Below the main crew
section is another large volume immediately behind the drive core, this
part of the ship contains the power plants, and the singularity
containment which is at the heart of the Ferranti/Yaur-Marann drive.
The
ship also features a variety of advanced technological features, around
the leading edge of it’s ‘wings’ is an advanced plasma discharge
weapon which can release beams in nearly any direction, though steerable
beam weapons of this fashion are widely used, the plasma is coupled
between the hundreds of units within each wing. By using appropriate
magnetic constriction the out put of all these devices can be tied
together, generating beams which can rival its larger directional
devices in destructive power. The wings them selves are nearly solid
machinery though one or two access corridors run between the generators,
these are more frequently used for maintenance and repair when docked
than when they are used in flight, the ‘wings’ also conatin powerful
field generators that damp out any irregularities in the Ferranti/Yaur-Marann
drive.
In
additional to the plasma beam weapons the ships can be fitted with
several big directed weapons, though these vary ship to ship weapons
units over 50m long can be installed which corresponds to the higher
band of weapons available to frigates (for comparison a small Orca
defender can be significantly less than 50m long). Some weapons pods can
be fed from their own dedicated reactors within the weapons casing, and
only draw the fuel and plasma they require from the ship.
The
main drive of the ship is a one jump Ferranti drive which can attain
speeds of ~10^12c but only for less than a second. At optimal speeds
(10^10c) jumps of up to 300 ly can be made, with a precision unrivalled
for the early Ferranti/Yaur-Marann drives with deviations at small jumps
(that is less than 50ly) less than one hundredth of an AU deviation per
light year jumped.
The
drive core units are actually integrated with a special detachable pod
carried in front of the powerplant pod, these can be swapped out at
special bases which carry ready pods, but more importantly means that
the ships can readily receive new state of the art drive cores. (Amerraya-‘Aur
class uses its own special line of driver core parts which are labelled
DC/AAXX where XX is the build number.)
The
Amerraya-‘Aur line was also one of the first ships to use a very
sophisticated nanite repair system, which not only repair damage in
conflict but also assist in the renaturing of the Ferranti core, as it
is the Amerraya-‘Aur is trans c capable immediately after jumping by
using auxiliary drives and adaptive use of the remains of its main drive
core.
