Overview of function

Detection of high-energy particles in immediate space craft environment, in this sense it is a direct sensing instrument. Individual units may specialize in measuring specific particle types, for example electrons or protons, other detectors measure heavier nuclei to elucidate ionosphere structure to or to measure ion torii around jovian moon systems. More often than not a spacecraft will have a range of detectors that work together to characterize a range of high energy particles, not only to provide data on the energy of the particles but also to their flight trajectories allowing analysis of where these particles are coming from
