Panatrak Empathic ability

The Panatrak are the only members of the federation to have a strong innate empathic ability that works without cues of body language or any other sensory clues, this ability is seen in many species of animal on Patinar though none have developed it to the same social level as the Panatrak.

            It has long been known that humans have different cycling brain waves, that they on the whole have simple repeating patterns that thought is overlaid. Sensors mounted on the skull can, easily detect these patterns, the theta and alpha waves and the rest of them. The Panatrak worked out early on that a similar process is responsible behind their own empathic abilities, with particular wave types and combinations generating specific empathic feelings. Subsequent analysis revealed that their are special loop shaped regions responsible for the strong emission of these waves, similarly designed regions also seemed to be sensitive to these produced waves and these two mechanisms seem to be responsible for the empathic faculty.

            With their continued developments in the early electronic age they also began to discover that the machines they started to create also seemed to generate a response in the engineers. The Panatrak brain generates faint electric fields, these react with cellular machinery to generate a weak electromagnetic signal that is the carrier for the empathic ability, what these engineers had been effected by was the ambient radio noise these machines generated. Later studies also proved that the low radio frequencies also explain the emotional effects generated by other phenomena such as aurora or thunderstorms. Soon the Panatrak tried to create machines that could project emotional state on nearby people, though these potential mind controllers never managed to accurately create such a device, if they had the peaceful history of Panatrak culture could have been very different.

            The Panatrak always claim to be  greatly affected by electronic equipment, stories have been told that certain machines to certain Panatrak promote certain emotional states, others tell of terrible headaches from other types of machines. The electronic age was certainly very unusual for the Panatrak culture, more so than for the human race.

            Today most computing is performed by opto-electronic systems which generate a lot less noise, on most ships particularly troublesome devices to the Panatrak state of well being have been developed so they no longer great effect them. Despite the federation’s attempt to cut down on the generated noise for fear that they would cause derangement and agony amongst a Panatrak crew, the Panatrak like a certain amount of noise, studies have shown they use them to navigate around a ship, and the variety of the noises helps them adapt to removal from a large community, which has always been a problem for the Panatrak. They also are incredibly good engineers because of it, as they have visceral feel for how a machine operates and can detect discord before any sensors register a machine fault.
