Marques of the
Federation Fleet
Although most of the
craft in Federation are based on shared design templates, there still
exists recognition of different marques in the Federation Fleet, some
particular shipyards are renowned for producing excellent science
vessels, others are known for reliability and durability. Although ships
are built from templates, they are all still unique, these differences
stem at the smaller scales of construction, so that although they may
share the same massive components, such as engines and reactors, the
smaller equipment will be coordinated by the people on the construction
yard. Though these differences do not greatly make the models different,
the ideas of the designers and builders can be allowed to experiment,
and these new philosophies of design incorporated into the next line of
models. The attributes of certain marques are listed below.
The different races in
the Federation are accredited with certain ship building attributes, the
below lists these attributes where construction facilities are
predominantly of some particular race.
Ships made in Trenoc
construction facilities.
The Trenoc have had the
most experience in space of all the Federation’s races, their craft
have been attributed with good build quality, reliability and
resilience. Though some of these attributes are arguable, the Trenoc
working on these construction yards have often been in the business for
more than one generation, and these yards are often very efficient. The
smaller facilities of the Trenoc often specialise in a method of
refitting seldom used elsewhere in the Federation. If a relatively
sophisticated craft is being broken down, and other smaller craft are
being refitted or built, then some of the components of that ship are
incorporated into these new craft whether or not they are part of the
design template. This idea is growing favour in the Federation as it
produces hybrid vehicles in the smaller classes, often with quite large
differences in basic components to the design template. Though these
bodge jobs would pose difficulty for some manufacturers, especially in
getting the reliability and the performance parameters, the Trenoc can
modify templates almost seamlessly to create these new vehicles.
Ships made in Panatrak
construction facilities.
Nearly as experienced
as the Trenoc, and at a certain natural advantage of being avian,
Panatrak designers and their shipyards are credited with giving models
added manoeuvrability and efficiency in flight systems, they are also
accredited with being more luxuriant and aesthetically pleasing. The
later statements are highly arguable, for Panatrak engineers are
sticklers for getting exact parameters and rarely consider looks, these
attributes are possibly more based on Panatrak crews who do often try to
improve their working environment. Panatrak construction yards are
common in flight systems, and are intimately associated with
modification of prototypes.
Ships made in Galen
construction facilities
The Galen are
recognised to be perhaps one of the most inspired races in the
Federation, and certainly always at the edge of technical development.
The ships they produce reflect this, though they are not accredited with
perhaps the reliability or the exacting parameters of the other races
shipyards, they are well known for a rugged flexibility and resilience,
and like the Trenoc’s ships, containing equipment not found on the
templates. Though they build there ships to Federation standards, the
Galen tend to stick additional equipment onboard, as well as prototype
and state of the art instruments and engines, the result is a ship with
the potential for greatly extended abilities but with its own set of
unique behaviour, that although perhaps unreliable at first, the crew
will adapt to and adjust for. The Galen shipyards are perhaps best
recognised for their excellent refit services, even if it takes a bit of
work getting these extras working.
Ships made in Human
Facilities.
Humans though
relatively new at ship building, and certainly are not recognised with
the reliability and perfection of the Trenoc shipyards, are however
recognised for certain better attributes. The craft are recognised for
their technological excellence, matching the new facilities built for
their construction, though not as efficient or rapid at production Human
shipyards are accredited with a certain ingenuity, and recognised for
elegance and efficiency in their designs.
Ships made in race
non-dominated shipyards
These tend to be the
larger shipyards and they are recognised for high efficiency and good
quality of work, other attributes of the produced craft depend on the
construction team and specialists involved, which roughly follow the
rules above for races, though it would be more accurate to describe
their attributes from the ‘schools’ the team draws upon, if the team
has been working for a long time in Trenoc construction yards, or has a
Trenoc mentor, then they will inherit these qualities.
Ships who have been
designed and constructed with a Pholi containing team
Though the Pholi seem
only to take an almost pedestrian role in modern Federation construction
facilities, the input they do make is often greatly insightful, and if a
ship has been constructed by some unusually hands on Pholi then the crew
often discover little changes in the design template that give an
unexpected benefit. It is often jokingly remarked that any Pholi fitted
component will never fail, or break, however this is not entirely
unfounded, especially when it comes to their excellence at computer
architecture.
Special Marques in the
Federation Fleet
Particular construction
facilities are also accredited with particular attributes, these tend to
originate in the design teams that have been working their for a long
time, and as such have developed a way of doing things that generate
favourable results.
Crucible/Vishniac craft
Both of these
particular marques come from construction facilities on Mars (sol
system), and are well known for their technical excellence. The craft
produced at these two sites tend to be state of the art and the pinnacle
of design for those templates. The craft are often fitted above and
beyond the requirements of the templates. This excellence does not
originate in good construction facilities, but because these facilities
have been producing state of the art custom craft since they were
founded. This working philosophy of treating each individual craft as a
one off, has produced these excellent craft. Of the marques recognised
in the Federation these twin sites merit one of the highest positions.
Forge Craft
Forge is a major ship
construction system, and contributes a large percentage of all
constructed Federation craft. The large industry and relatively new
construction facilities combined with the best of the old construction
teams give craft from these shipyards a good reputation of problem free
and reliable craft.
Ex Panatrak Flight test
facilities
Many of the prototypes
testing facilities in flight systems go on produce vehicles. Though
these production facilities are small they have often accumulated the
most experienced and best personnel. For a similar reason as to why the
Crucible and Vishniac craft are revered, ex-testing facilities are also
well known for producing excellent craft. The Panatrak experts on these
bases often push the drive systems to their greatest efficiency getting
the most out of the hardware, rather than the expected parameters, there
is still a feeling for craftsmanship. Particularly well-known facilities
of this type include those in the Patinar system (often described by the
unflattering navigation description, of Panatrak Production and Test
Facility [PPTF] followed by their number.
Other previous test
facilities include the older Vela construction yards, and the recently
decommissioned military test yards in the Kolisiman system.
Construction yards of
the Athene system
Athene represents a
gathering of what makes the Federation Great, this is reflected in the
ship construction in this system. Athene is also recognised for holding
perhaps the most important centres for star ship design and ship
technologies research, and unsurprisingly this has fed its way into the
test and construction facilities of this system. Any new models, or
prototypes are reckoned to be reliable and without problems if it has
spent a lot of time in one of the research facilities here, in fact it
is almost a pre-requisite that a new model must be built and tested in
this system before it is released for general production.
