Planetary Cartography Institute

Name: Planetary Cartography Institute

Location: Traditionally, Kindara-san asteroid facility, original Trenoc cartography vessel base, though in the modern Federation many minor cartography institutes contribute to the original Trenoc Fleet.

Established: 1942

Notes: The Planetary Cartography Institute was born in the expansion era of the Trenoc, and was responsible for sending out mapping vessels as well as coordinating exo-planetary studies. The Kindara-san base was then dedicated to maintaining the cartography fleet, over time Kindara-san base expanded to include all the facilities to make the Institute fully autonomous. The Kindara-san facility still maintains a fleet in the modern Federation though an increasing number of vessels are built elsewhere than its shipyards. Though the PCI is an important part of the mapping fleet, its more valuable role is a channel for information, and owes its longevity to the depth and accuracy of its studies. The Planetary Cartography Institute is essentially a part of the Federation cartography fleet, though its historic past will maintain its current name. The modern purpose of the PCI is in exploration, as well as pioneering new mapping vessels, the research and analysis work is often shared amongst participating universities, though work is published under the PCI’s name. Because of its large mapping fleet it plays an important part of Federation Starship Organisation (FSO), though its operations are often quite separate from the Federation main. The PCI is beginning to expand into planetary monitoring, as its original role in exploration is leaving gaps in missions to the more exotic planets within established Federation space.
