Definition of a key system

The above systems are important for one or more of the following reasons,

1)     It is a Federation homeworld, or Pholi colony world. These are the homes to Races that make up the federation, these systems are the most highly regarded systems of all, although no-one knows the exact homeworld of the Pholi, they have settled on their colony worlds for a very long time and are considered as home worlds.

2)     The system contains a planet with a high federation citizen population. Not only are these colonies important for their population, but also for the culture and infrastructure that is associated with them. It is also important that the populations need not be restricted just to planets, but also asteroid colonies.

3)     The system is a site of important alien artifacts or ancient cultures. These sites are rare, due to the censoring activities of past epochs, generally sophisticated technologies have been excised from ruins, though some exceptions do exist within federation space. These sites are considered important galactic heritage.

4)     The system is an important site of specific federation activities. These types of systems include important construction yards, or flight system testing systems. Also in this category are systems which house important federation research facilities or important experiments.

5)     Finally the system contains an exceptional phenomenon natural or artificial that is of special attention to federation scientists. Most of these systems have associated research stations that better suits them to the above category.

The key systems listed above only make up a small percentage of the total stars system encompassed in federation space, but few of these systems have suitable stars to support life supporting worlds, and of the ones that do, only a few have existing life on their planets. For these simple reasons, the several thousand stars that exist with the federation’s inner borders only a few have become key systems.
